Synopsis It is impossible for a computer algorithm to produce truly random numbers, without relying on some external-to-the-machine source of random noise to sample. As such, many “random” number generators on computers are in fact pseudorandom. As you might expect, these random number generators can display some predictability, if you go looking for it. One method of looking for patterns (that does not require much technical background to perform) in a random number generator is called the spectral test, and involves looking at series of three consecutively-generated numbers (plotted as (x, y, z)). A PRNG that “passes” the spectral test will generate a cloud of dots, while an unsuccessful PRNG will generate highly-structured output. Activity Instructions: In this assignment, you will discuss one pseudorandom number generator: random function in excel. Using excel, you will need to generate at least 500 values for x, 500 for y, and 500 for z. Once you generate the 500 x-values, 500 y-values, and 500 z-values (total 1500 points from excel), you will plot the data on a 3D plot. Each point on the 3D plot will have one x-value, one y-value, and one z-value. Note: You may want to use a different program to do the visualization, as Excel has poor-to-no support for 3-D plotting. You can save your spreadsheet (the numbers) as a CSV file, which will save the numbers you generated, and that data can be read by many visualization programs (such as gnuplot). Save your file as Lastname_U2_Activity_SpecralTest.xlsx (or the extension of the file type you used, for example .CSV). Write a brief observation about the random number generator in excel. How does this generator work? Explain briefly in 300 words how this generator operates and how does it select the seed value. Submit your file using the below upload instructions.
